Four things force the decision: breakers that trip under normal use, a panel with no room for the circuits you need, equipment a licensed electrician finds damaged or obsolete, or a new large load like an air conditioner, EV charger, or battery backup that your service cannot carry. Age alone is not one of them. What decides it is the calculated load against what your service delivers.

What electrical work can a Texas homeowner legally do?
Under Section 1305.003(a)(6) of the Occupations Code, Texas removes the state electrician licensing requirement for work performed in or on a dwelling by a person who owns and resides in it. That is three conditions rather than one, and the third is the catch: the exemption only reaches work not specifically regulated by a municipal ordinance. It removes a license requirement and nothing else. The permit, the inspection, and the code your work is measured against all remain, and your city sets all three.

What does it take to add an EV charger at home?
It takes a dedicated 240 volt circuit from your electrical panel out to wherever the car parks, and enough spare capacity in that panel and in your service to carry that load. The charger is rarely the constraint. A load calculation on the whole house is what settles the question, which is why two neighbors with identical panels can get different answers. If the panel is genuinely full, a subpanel, a load management device, and a service upgrade each fix a different problem, and only the load calculation tells you which problem you have.

Yes, on all work that requires one. Panel upgrades, rewiring, new circuits, and EV charger installs all require permits in DFW municipalities. We handle the filing and coordinate the final inspection. Unpermitted electrical work creates real problems when you sell the home or file an insurance claim.
If your home was built before 1980, it may have aluminum wiring or outdated grounding. Neither is automatically dangerous, but both need evaluation by a licensed electrician. We inspect, document what we find, and give you an honest picture of your actual risk before recommending any work.
