Should you repair or replace your air conditioner?

Most advice on this question is a slogan. The version that works is arithmetic. Compare what each option costs per year of service you get out of it, then check the two things that quietly changed the answer in 2026.

Short answer

Compare cost per remaining year, not sticker price. Divide the repair quote by the years the system has left. Divide a replacement by however many years you expect a new one to last. The lower number is the cheaper path on cost alone, before you weigh comfort, efficiency, and the odds of a second failure. You set the service-life number yourself in the calculator.

Why sticker price is the wrong comparison

A repair quote and a replacement quote are not the same kind of number. One buys a few more years. The other buys a full service life. Put them side by side anyway and you get the classic trap: a run of repairs that ends up costing more than the replacement you kept postponing.

Cost per remaining year fixes that, because it puts both options in the same units. The calculator below runs it and shows its working, so you can see which input is doing the heavy lifting.

Note what it does not do: quote you a service life. There is no authoritative figure we can cite for how long an air conditioner lasts, and plenty of pages will hand you one anyway. That assumption is an input you control, because the answer moves with it and you should be able to see that happen.

The two things that changed this math recently

Refrigerant is no longer a footnote

The Environmental Protection Agency is stepping down production of R-410A, the refrigerant in most systems built between roughly 2010 and 2024, under a federal law called the AIM Act. Two things follow from that, and they are commonly confused, so it is worth stating both plainly.

Your existing system is fine. The phasedown restricts production and new equipment. It does not ban operating or servicing systems that are already installed. A licensed technician can continue to service R-410A equipment, and nobody is going to tell you to replace a working air conditioner because of it.

But the cost outlook on refrigerant-heavy repairs has shifted. As the production cap tightens, service refrigerant gets scarcer and more expensive. So a refrigerant-heavy repair on an older system carries more future cost risk than the same repair did a few years ago. New equipment ships with different refrigerants instead, mainly R-454B and R-32, which do far less damage to the climate if they leak.

Systems built for R-22, generally the 2010-and-earlier generation, are the clearest case of all. That refrigerant is no longer produced, and a sealed-system repair on one of those is usually money spent on borrowed time.

Minimum efficiency moved

Texas sits in the Department of Energy Southeast region. Since the 2023 standards took effect, a split-system air conditioner installed here has to meet at least 14.3 SEER2 below 45,000 BTU, which is about 3.75 tons, or 13.8 SEER2 above that. SEER2 is the federal efficiency rating, where a higher number means less electricity for the same cooling. If your current system predates that, a replacement is not like-for-like. It is a step up in efficiency whether or not you pay extra for one. Some of that cost comes back to you in lower running costs.

    What the calculator cannot see

    Four things routinely change the answer and no form can capture any of them:

    • Whether this failure points at another one. A compressor that failed because of a restriction elsewhere in the system will take the new compressor with it. Ask what caused the failure, not just what failed.
    • The state of the ductwork. Undersized or leaking ducts cap what any equipment can deliver. A replacement quote that ignores the ducts may not fix the comfort problem that prompted the call.
    • Whether the system was sized correctly in the first place. An oversized system short-cycles and wears out early, and replacing it like-for-like repeats the mistake for another fifteen years. See the sizing reality check.
    • Remaining warranty. Parts warranties of five to ten years are common, and homeowners miss them constantly because claiming one means producing the install date or a registration nobody remembers doing.

    Questions worth asking before you approve anything

    1. What failed, and what caused it to fail?
    2. What else on this system is near the end of its life?
    3. What refrigerant does it use, and how does that affect what this repair costs to maintain?
    4. Is any part of this covered by a manufacturer or labor warranty that is still running?
    5. If I put this money toward a replacement instead, what would that buy?

    Is there a simple rule for when to replace an air conditioner instead of repairing it?

    The rules you see quoted, like multiplying the age of the system by the repair cost, are rough heuristics rather than engineering. They are useful as a gut check and nothing more. The more reliable comparison is cost per remaining year: a 1,200 dollar repair on a system with 3 years left costs 400 dollars a year, while a replacement that lasts 18 years costs its price divided by 18. Run both numbers before deciding.

    Does the refrigerant in my system change the repair or replace decision?

    It can. Systems built for R-22 are the clearest case, since that refrigerant is no longer produced and servicing a leak gets expensive. R-410A systems are the newer question. Under the EPA HFC phasedown, production of R-410A is being stepped down while existing systems stay legal to run and legal to service. The practical effect is that refrigerant-heavy repairs on older R-410A equipment carry more future cost risk than the same repair did a few years ago.

    How long should a central air conditioner last in North Texas?

    There is no single authoritative number, and you should be wary of any page that gives you one without saying where it came from. What is defensible is the shape of it. A system that runs long cooling seasons, was oversized at install, or has been neglected wears out sooner. A DFW summer puts more run hours on a system than the same equipment would see in a milder climate, so run hours and service history tell you more than age alone.     What should I ask before approving a large AC repair?

    Ask what failed and why. Ask whether the failure points at other components near the end of their life. Then ask what refrigerant the system uses, whether any manufacturer warranty is still running, and what the same money would put toward a replacement. A contractor who cannot answer the "why did this fail" question has diagnosed a symptom rather than a cause.
